The speaker phone in the base and the handset is the best quality of any phone I have ever used. I have bought so many hands-free ear pieces that sounded great for a week, but then tanked - but I will clip the beltclip of this phone on my collar as I do chores and I can have a conversation without problems with folks who say I sound loud and clear. I have an 802.11 b&g compatible wireless network at home with 3 wireless routers in various location in my home. Wireless phones below the 5.8ghz range can wreak havoc with these networks. Having the extra handset that doesn't require a phone jack is a real blessing. When I built my house, I had no idea I would one day have an indoor rabbit as a pet - and rabbits chew cords, which necessitates moving phones to other locations where I didn't think to have phone jacks installed. Since the satellite phone requires that it first sit in the original handset, you know that your neighbor isn't listening to your conversation with their own handset the way it used to work in the early 1990s. The range isn't stellar... if I get more than 50 feet away, conversations get garbled, but part of that is due to the short wavelength of these microwave phones. Concrete is also a natural filter for RF (radio frequencies), so any concrete in the line of sight between your handset and base is going to cause interference. I have had these phones for 3 years and have had to replace the battery once - and unlike all the other portable phones I have had, this is the only one where I wasn't ready to just buy a whole new phone when the battery died. I like the easy-to-understand interface that doesn't require me to consult a manual and the speakerphone is a neck saver. I simply do not hold a phone to my ear anymore - it's not good for your neck or spine to crook your head for hours at a time and I like using a phone that requires no hands. I have owned several cordless phones and so far, this is the best.

I bought this unit to replace a beautiful but dying Siemens expandable phone system. While most of the features work as advertised, my big complaint is with the handsets not answering an incoming call when you pick them up. I may be overly critical, but this is a function I generally expect from my telephones, especially ones costing this much. This inability to connect with an incoming signal has been a reoccuring problem with the first system and two replacement ones. We also get quite a bit of static that I suspect is interference with my wireless network even though the 5.8 ghz technology is suppose to avoid this problem

We also have a problem with people calling and getting a fax signal even though we don't have a fax machine. This is probably a phone company problem but at this point I'm not willing to give Uniden the benefit of the doubt.

I'll be returning this system and trying the Vtech i5871.

Overall, this is a pretty good phone and I'm going to stick with it (despite buying and dumping two or three similar phones in the past). The reception is good and the construction is solid.

The only problem after several months of use is that the battery dies suddenly without warning and I usually loose the call. It starts beeping, then a few seconds later the call is gone. I wish it gave like a one minute morning or something.

After much review - including Consumer Reports - I decided to purchase this phone. We were extrememly happy until we tried to go outside of the house with it. The static became untolerable during calls. Other than this the phone is great.

This is a phone bought 9 years ago in a house with five kids using it. The toughest phone anywhere. It took eight years to finally drop it enough to break it. Just the same the numbers were wearing off anyway. It worked after being left in the rain and dirt for days. It served teenage use. Battery time is all day long. I use to have phone trouble. Until this phone. It has very good range. It is easy to use if you read the book. It has earjack and sometimes as in my case sold with a headset. I love this phone. Best ever bought. I even bought another system new last year just like the original because I finally broke the #1 handset. One day it will wareout as all things do. But I have my back up. Good for the next ten plus year yahoo.

This is my second Uniden Phone that I REALLY LOVE. It is only 5" x 2", which makes it easy to dial with one hand. It has great clarity, with or without head phones.

It was very easy to program. This phone holds 100 phone numbers and you can enter them in one phone and copy it to the other one. That is a great feature!

You can get your messages even when you are away form home. This phone also has a speaker box on it, so you can put either phone on speaker an set it down and everyone in the room can hear and talk to the person on the other end.

The speaker phone on the base also works great. When family or friends call from out of town, my husband and I both visit with them and with great clarity!

I love the orange color of the backlighting, it makes it very easy to read. It is also easy to see when you have messages waiting for you from the base. When you want to hear your messages from one of the handsets, you push the select button and your messages will play out loud through the speaker box on the back of the handset. It is a nice feature, not having to go to the base to hear your messages.

They quit making the model that I was looking for and I did alot of research before I bought this. I am very happy with this little phone that is packed with nothing but great features! If you are looking for a expandable, small phone with great reception, then you will not be disappointed with this one!

There are some other nice features that are not mentioned elsewhere:

You can easily add a caller-ID entry into the phone book. This makes it easy to populate your phone-book over time as friends call.

You can retrieve messages and perform other answering machine functions from the handsets.

The handsets do not start ringing until the second ring of the call. This helps me a lot because I have a computer that hnags up on telelmarketers but can only do so after the caller-ID string shows up. It only appears during the first ring. With this system, I don't even have to hear a ring for rejected calls.

The baby monitor function is clear as a bell. Every baby monitor I have owned is full of static pops and cracks.

I bought this phone from a local merchant to replace the 2.4ghz phone that I had before. I thought the 5.8ghz would provide better reception, better distance, etc. WRONG!! I mirror the thoughts of a previous reviewer...this is the worst phone I have ever owned.

Terrible static, unbelievably short range and poor quality throughout. The only redeeming feature is the easy to read screen, but there is no way that that offsets all the negatives. Avoid at all costs.

"Watch Out - Not OEM Battery" 2009-05-20

One of the biggest problems in online battery purchasing is ordering an OEM replacement battery (in this case, one from Uniden) and a cheap replacement from China. This seller represents the item as the former, when it's actually the latter.

So what's the difference? OEM's actually care about the image of their company, so they ship high quality battery cells. Cheap manufacturers, just want you to buy it, so they just care that it works for a short period of time.

This causes two problems: first, the cheap batteries are usually good for a much shorter period of time (a few months, rather than years). This means that people who receive the batteries provide positive feedback on sites like this only to be left in the cold when the battery dies shortly after. Second, the cheap batteries usually have no mechanism for turning off if the battery overheats (which is more likely in a cheap battery). As a result, cheap batteries are a severe fire hazard.

As a result: AVOID this product, and this deceptive seller. The extra $5 by going elsewhere will pay for itself many times over.

Multiuser expandable, the TRU8865-2 supports up to 10 handsets on the same system (model TCX800), allowing you to place extra handsets wherever you need them. Caller-ID and call-waiting compatible, the base unit holds up to 100 caller ID/memory locations in its internal memory, while each handset stores up to 50 locations, so you can keep track of incoming calls and store the most important phone numbers for easy recall. we have had the Uniden 8865-2 wireless phone for over 3 years now and it works great. am surprised others have had problems with reception. we have a 5000 sq ft home and i get great reception anywhere in the house...basement, 2nd floor, etc. i can even go outside in the driveway, on the front stoop. highly recommend...i would buy another uniden in a heartbeat. I previously bought panasonics and those phones need work.

I wanted to wait awhile before I wrote my review. I wanted to really test this phone out before I sent words in an email. I must say I am completely satisfied with this phone. The ease of use and the clarity are just some of it's features.

Last night, I finally figured out how to redial a telephone number out of your own area code from caller ID. My old Uniden would allow me to find the telephone number through Caller ID, then push #1 and then talk. The number would be dialed. This phone doesn't work that way. You must first find the out of area phone number through Caller ID, then push the * button, then push Talk, the phone number will be dialed. I was very happy because I was trying to figure this out for awhile.

I don't know if the manuel covers this feature. If it does I didn't find it. After finding what I was looking for I decided it was time for my review. Now I can't find anything I don't like on this telephone. The speaker phone feature is absolutely wonderful...loud and clear! I would recommend this telephone to anyone.

Owned the base unit & one handset for 8 months. About once a month the unit would stop working. Proceeded to unplug the unit and let sit for awhile then reconnect. Unit would be fine for another month then would have to repeat the process. This last time the phone would not function at all. Tech support could not figure out the problem. Was told someone would call me which of course never happened. Could never get in touch with tech support again, constantly on hold. Removed the battery & trashed the unit.

We purchased this phone mainly for the 5.8GHz technology to reduce interference with our wireless internet connection. We are using this phone with Packet8's VoIP phone service, and have seen lots of improvement in voice quality. I bought this phone 6 months ago and I wish I had kept the recept so I could return it. First off, you can not keep it on the charger or the battery will only allow you to talk for 20-30 minutes before dying. When it dies it will give you a couple of beeps notice then it shuts off. If you do not hang up before it shuts off then your phone line is unusable. You actually have to unplug the phone from the phone line just to recieve or call on other phones. I have never heard of this happening before and my friends and family are tired of talking to me only to hang up on them without warning because my phone is beeping and I know I only have a few seconds to hang up or risk losing my phone line for hours. I would have given this phone zero stars if I could have. I would recommend spending a few extra dollars and go with another expandable system. Don't make the same mistake I made.

I like these phones.

The reception is good.

The only drawback is that if you pick up one phone, the other one cannot connect to the base, but that may be typical to the phones which share one base.

Other than that, the phones are great and the sound is good.

These are terrible phones. They crackle and have a large amount of background noise. The Caller ID menu does not display well either. Maybe they interfere with our wireless network. There is no clear channel on them. They are pretty much unusable. I didn't pay much for them but it was all wasted.

Ordered base and additional unit. Only received additional unit. Will dispute charge with credit card company. Vendor that sold me product would not send me base. I tried calling and leaving messages as well as email but to no avail still without base. I like the product I already had one just expanding and needed another base. Vendor is not reliable. This is also second time I have had diffuclty purchasing something via amazon.com. Will probably not order again using amazon.

1. If two people pick up handsets to answer at the same time ONLY ONE will actually be connected to the incoming call. The other will get an error tone and not hear the conversation. The person using the line must first put the outside party on hold, ring the expansion handset, then remove the hold.

2. This phone does NOT have a Message Indicator Light

3. The buttons are too difficult to push accurately.

4. The phone makes an annoying noise when you place it back on the base.

The sound's a little tinny, but no more interference from various wireless contraptions, which was making me crazy. Much smaller than what I was used to, but then it only took a day to get used to it. The functions are pretty intuitive and it's nice having a second extension that only requires a regular electrical outlet.

I am moving up from a Uniden Tru446 2.4GHz phone system which interferes with my wireless when I get a phone ring. BAD! Just unpacked this new phone today and notice that it's missing two critical features:

1. No speed dialing. I used to be able to set ten numbers for speed dial and a special number for rocketdial. Hold down 1 and it brought up my mother, then hit talk. Hold down 0 and it brought up voicemail. No dice on this one. I don't know how I can get around this one.

2. No lighted keys. If you are in the dark, forget about it. The old phone had lighted rubberized keys. This phone does not. I talk at night in the dark a lot. I have loved this feature on my older Uniden. Can live with this though.

Also ringer volume is rather low even on maximum. I can live with this though.

Otherwise, the handsets are sleek. No antenna (which I like). No interference with wireless. No interference from microwave. Transferable phone book entries. Speakerphone. Ability to use intercom system. Ability to label phones with their own identifiers. Phone numbers can get unique ringers.

All in all, I like this phone, but the lack of speed dialing is a problem for me.

Added:

After playing around with this phone system, I really have to change my review. This is a great phone system. The added features over my previous system makes this a great product (even without the speed dialing).

More good: Displays date and time on handsets. Can shut off handset (so the phone doesn't wake you up when you don't want it to). Has built-in speakerphone for each handset. Can transfer calls from one handset to another. Appointment reminders. Alarm set. All these good features were LACKING on my previous phone. There's more good... read below.

I got around the speed dialing problem, kind of. This is what I did: I programmed my top ten entries in the phone book and prefixed the name with a number. This way, I can scroll through the entries by number and they're always ahead of any other entries. Not as fast as the speed dialing, but it works and I think I can live with it, given all the other great features.

Another great feature of this phone is that when you dial back from a caller-ID remembered number, it actually works. With my old phone, it didn't. This phone dials a number with or without prefixing with a 1. But this really makes life a dream. With my old phone, I would have to remember the number, write it down even, and then dial it. But on this phone it works.

So, overall, a great big leap forward for this phone over my previous generation 2.4GHz phone.

Would give it 5 stars if it had the speed dialing. So, it's really a 4.5 star rating.

I know, I'm schizophrenic! I've been using this phone for a week now. It's majorly flawed. Here's my list of problems.

1. Buttons are not optimally placed... so you can very easily hit the intercom button while on a phone call and not know how to get back.

2. The personalized ringtones don't work right away. When the phone rings, you get the regular ringtone for the first ring and then it changes to the personalized one.

3. There is no light for message waiting indication, just a small envelope on the screen.

4. Caller ID scrolling is MUCH slower than my OLD uniden.

5. Local calls on the caller ID cannot be called back directly. i.e., the local area code does not get pre-pended to the number.

6. Plastic keys are less good than rubberized keys (my old phone). There's a general hard-to-press feel of the keys.

7. voice quality is not that good. sometimes there is an echo (this is not a service issue).

8. ringer is QUIET! much quieter than my old phone.

why can't i get my old phone with these new features (intercom, battery indicator, etc.)???

So, take my 4.5 stars and subtract about 3.
